Tucson Gates Pass located on the West side of town is named after an old timer named Thomas Gates who wanted a shorter route over to his mine in Avra Valley. Now a part of the Tucson Mountain Community Park, Gates Pass is a popular spot for hiking, biking or just relaxing and enjoying the unbelievable views.
The road climbs gently up into the Tucson Mountains and the park is located in the pass as you reach the top. There are several pull out areas along the road for your use.
The scenery up here is Natural Desert, as natural and untamed as you can get. You may see many different types of wildlife here including Deer, Javalina, Bobcats, Foxes and of course all the small desert critters like rabbits, snakes, quail and such.
The hillsides of Gates Pass in Tucson are studded with Saguaro Cactus. This place has zillions of them. If you are looking for a place to take some great Saguaro Cactus pictures, this is a good spot. Oh, and did we mention the Fantastic Mountain Views!
Gates Pass is on the way to several Tucson Attractions such as the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum, Old Tucson Studios and Saguaro National Park West. If you are heading for those spots be sure to add a little time to stop and check out Gates Pass.
Other popular Tucson Attractions include Kitt Peak about 50 miles Southwest of Tucson, Old Tucson Studios West of Tucson and the Pima Air & Space Museum on the South Side of Tucson.
