Kitts Peak - 520-318-8726 | |
|
Kitts Peak is really Cool, both intellectually and figuratively! The intellectual side is amazing. They have a wonderful Visitor Center and a Museum packed full of fascinating exhibits, unbelievable photos of Galaxies and more. Figuratively this place is Freezing! It is located on the top of a mountain at an elevation of 6,875 feet. They will tell you it's cold, dress warm. BELIEVE THEM! We are originally from Alaska, and we froze our tails off up there.
The Visitor Center is open from 9AM till 3:45PM and there are guided tours at 10, 11:30 and 1:30. They request a $2 donation to visit the center and the guided tours cost $3.50 for adults and $2 for kids. They also have a very popular (reservations required) nightly viewing program. We went to that and really enjoyed it. There are no services at Kitts Peak, be sure to gas up before heading out there, nearest gas is 16 miles away. There is a pay phone and a restroom at the peak but very limited food, so eat before going or pack a lunch (picnic areas available). Always be sure to call before going all the way out there, just to make sure that they are open. Also Please Note: The use of Cell Phones is prohibited on the Mountain. They interfere with some of the Radio Telescopes up there. Kitts Peak is a really fun day trip and the night program is fascinating. We have visited Kitts Peak a couple of times and will certainly go back. Great Fun and really neat stuff there! Driving Directions: Kitts Peak is located a little over 50 miles southwest of Tucson in the Quinlan Mountains. From Tucson go South on I-19, then West on Ajo Way (exit 99). You will follow that all the way out past Ryan Airfield and Three Points and then turn South on 386. It takes about 90 minutes to get there.
